This tutorial will show you how to create a shutdown/restart tile in Windows 8. To shut down your system, you can use shortcuts such as the ALT key + F4 shortcut or the WIN key + C which will display the power icon on the right side of the screen. But it is always nice to have the shutdown/restart shortcut right there on your desktop. This is not available in Windows 8 by default. However it is possible to customize it.
How to create a shutdown tile in Windows 8?
Right-click on an open area on your desktop, go to New and then select Shortcut as seen in the below screenshot.
Type the ‘ shutdown /p’ or ’ shutdown /r /t 0’ under type the location of the item, then click on the Next button
Type Shutdown under Type a name for this shortcut and then click Finish
Once the shortcut is created on the desktop, right click on it and select Properties. And choose an icon and click the OK button twice.
You will now have a shortcut on your desktop. If you click the shortcut, your PC will shut down, right click on this shortcut and then choose Pin to Start.
Alternatively, if you want to create a ‘Restart’ tile instead of the shutdown tile, you can do it following the same steps explained above (step1,step4 and step5 remain the same) and keeping in mind the following changes in step 2 and step 3.
Changes in Step 2
Type the ‘Shutdown.exe -r -t 00’ under type the location of the item and then click on the Next button as seen in the below screen shot.
Changes in Step 3
Type Restart under Type a name for this shortcut and then click Finish as you can see in the below screen shot.
